These days, the best pick up line a guy can give me is, “Hi, I work for Google.” They just know how to do their stuff man. I didn’t think it was possible for my love to grow, but with the launch of iGoogle, I’m pretty much ready to name my first son Google.
Those who are a little behind (basically all my friends who read this blog and think I speak a different language), read this article: Personal Touch to Google Homepage.
If you’re like me and you’re an info-crazed, procrastinating, web-surfing maniac, your computer routine is the following: check gmail, log into AIM, read over news headlines, blog updates, check gmail again, respond to an IM, go to Digg, update twitter, update jaiku, update blog, answer a gchat message, check the weather via weather.com, look up movie times on moviefone, scour the web for interesting photos/facts/stories, laugh at the latest all the rage youtube video, etc.
I know what you’re thinking. THAT’s why you don’t get your work done Alexa. Nope, it’s not that. See, I do all of this in under 20 minutes because I’ve perfected my routine. What I love about iGoogle though, is that my 20 minute routine can now be condensed to 10. I no longer have to keep 1,428 Firefox tabs up because it’s all consolidated on my Google homepage baby.
There are tons of About me Surveys that I could fill out, but IMO there is nothing more telling about a person than their computer habits. I recently read that 40% of Phi Beta Kappa members aren’t on facebook (Phi Beta Kappa = presitigious college Honor Society). This basically proves that there’s a correlation between your GPA and the amount of time you spend on Facebook/the amount of friends you have. The higher the GPA, the less time on facebook. The less time on facebook, well, that just means nobody likes you.
Seriously, you can learn a lot about a person based on the sites they frequent and how adept they are at surfing the web. Just based off of someones delicious links, I can assess things like their sense of humor or if they’re well read or not. In general, your Internet habits reflect your individual connectedness to the world at large, but also the filters you use to see it. Here’s a little bit about me, as told by my iGoogle:
On my Home page, you’ll find my jaiku widget, NY weather, a countdown to graduation, world clocks displaying the time in various locations (London, NY, Las Vegas, and the Philippines), a daily to do list, my gmail, and various quotes like “What Happened in History Today.” At the bottom I have spell check, a calculator, and a language translator.
My news tab features news headlines of publications whose newsfeeds I read regularly. First and foremost, the NYTimes, followed by BBC, NPR, CNN, Reuters, and blogs like Gothamist and Gawker.
I am such a web junkie so this tab features mindless crap like cute puppy photos, fortune cookie sayings, a digital piano keyboard, Shakespeare insults, Digg feeds, and the best of Craigslist and Youtube.
When coursepackets and textbooks just get to be too much and facebook and myspace aren’t doing it for me, this is the page I go to. NYTimes classic crossword, Calvin & Hobbes cartoons, PACMAN, and other miscellaneous games like old school Super Mario Bros and Hangman.
Mmm. I love travel, culture, movies and music so on this page I have things like movie showtimes, a webcam from the Eiffel Tower, National Geographic Photo of the Day, Itunes free downloads, and my guilty pleasure: People.com headlines (I’m STILL waiting for my Britney comeback, btw).
Last, but certainly not least is my Science & Tech tab. This is so I can keep up with my boyfriend and dad who are just too up to speed when it comes to these topics. For the bf, the latest tech news headlines + PCMag product reviews and tips = Love. For my dad, former teacher, trivia guru, star gazer extraordinaire, I have my Scientific American.com feed, Hubble Images and daily Moon phase.
iLove iGoogle.

Dude… I’d seriously find it extremely weird to have a niece/nephew named Google. >.
Comment by Kim May 3, 2007 @ 8:41 pmI can’t believe someone else loves iGoogle too! I was talking about it the other day, when the name changed, and no one around me understood what I was talking about. But, when I was giving a Powerpoint presentation in my Arabic class, I logged into iGoogle and I got my PPT from my Gmail account, someone yelled out “You pimped out your Google? Sweet.” And I smiled a bit.
